Kraft vs White Paper Bags: Which Should You Choose?

Kraft paper bags have a natural brown appearance and are widely used for retail, food and grocery packaging. White paper bags offer a bright surface with higher contrast for colour printing, and are common in retail, jewellery and fashion. Both can be custom-printed and finished — the right choice depends on the look, use case and print requirements.
Brown Kraft Paper Bags
Brown kraft paper gets its colour from unbleached wood pulp. The natural earthy appearance suits brands that want a straightforward, honest look — particularly common in grocery, food service, bakeries and retailers with an artisan or natural-product positioning.
Multi-colour offset printing works well on brown kraft — logos, brand names and simple patterns reproduce clearly. However, because the brown base affects colour perception, highly saturated colours and pastels tend to look different than they would on white paper.
White Paper Bags
White paper bags are made from bleached paper, providing a bright, clean surface. The white ground means colours print with higher contrast — brand logos, photography- derived artwork and vivid colour palettes all reproduce more accurately on white.
White bags are widely used in fashion retail, jewellery, pharmaceuticals and gifting where visual presentation and print quality are important. Art paper / SBS board — used for premium bags — is also a white-surface material.

Sustainability — What to Know
The recyclability and biodegradability of a paper bag depends primarily on whether it is laminated, not on whether the paper is brown or white.
- •Unlaminated bags — whether brown kraft or white — are recyclable and biodegradable (subject to local facilities).
- •Laminated bags contain a plastic film layer (gloss, matte or soft-touch). They are not universally biodegradable and should not be described as such.
