Paper Bag GSM Guide: What GSM Means and How to Choose It

Understand what GSM indicates, how it applies to paper bags, and how to approach GSM selection for your order.

GSM stands for grams per square metre and indicates the weight of the paper used for a bag. Kyara Packaging currently works across a 60–300 GSM range, depending on product type and specification.

What Does GSM Mean?

GSM — grams per square metre — is the standard way to express the weight and density of paper. One square metre of 80 GSM paper weighs 80 grams; one square metre of 200 GSM paper weighs 200 grams. Because denser paper generally has more fibre per unit area, higher GSM paper tends to feel stiffer and heavier in hand.

In the context of paper bags, GSM is one of the key specification variables — alongside material type, bag dimensions, construction method and handle type — that determine how a bag is built and what it is suited for.

GSM and Paper Bag Performance

GSM affects the weight, density and general handling feel of the paper. However, the performance of a finished paper bag depends on more than GSM alone:

  • Paper grade and quality — two papers at the same GSM can differ significantly in tensile strength and tear resistance depending on the pulp used and how the paper was manufactured.
  • Bag construction — the way a bag is glued and folded affects how it holds weight. Construction quality matters as much as paper weight.
  • Bag dimensions — a large bag with a wide base puts different stresses on paper than a narrow jewellery bag, even if both use the same GSM.
  • Handle type and attachment — twisted handles, rope handles and die-cut handles each place different load patterns on the bag. Handle attachment quality is a significant factor in how much weight a bag carries safely.
  • Lamination — laminated bags can perform well at lower GSM than unlaminated bags, because the laminate film adds surface rigidity and resistance to moisture.

Note: Higher GSM does not always mean a stronger bag. Paper grade, construction, dimensions, handles and finishing all contribute to performance. Specifications are confirmed before production begins.

How to Approach GSM Selection

When placing a custom paper bag order, you do not need to specify an exact GSM from the outset. Instead, describe what your bag needs to do: the size of the product it will carry, the approximate weight it should hold, the material you prefer (brown kraft, white kraft, art paper etc.), and any finishing such as lamination. The appropriate GSM is then determined at the specification stage.

If you already have a preferred GSM based on previous orders or reference samples, that can be stated at enquiry stage — the specification team will confirm whether it is achievable for your required bag type.
