Paper Bag Finishing Options for Custom Packaging

What foil stamping, embossing, spot UV and lamination do — when to use them and what to know about sustainability.

Available finishing options for custom paper bags include foil stamping, embossing, spot UV and lamination — available in gloss, matte and soft-touch variants. Finishing is applied after printing and is selected according to the bag type and design requirement.

Foil Stamping

Foil stamping applies a thin metallic film to specific areas of the bag surface using heat and pressure. Gold, silver and rose-gold foils are the most common choices. The result is a sharp, reflective metallic element — typically used for brand logos, wordmarks, borders and decorative details.

Best for: Luxury gift bags, jewellery bags, premium retail. Any bag where the brand wants a metallic accent on the logo or design.

Sustainability: Foil stamping does not add a plastic film to the bag surface. Unlaminated foil-stamped bags remain recyclable, subject to local facilities.

Embossing

Embossing creates a raised three-dimensional effect on specific areas of the bag surface by pressing the paper between shaped dies. The raised area is not coloured — it is the tactile and visual depth of the raised surface that creates the effect. Debossing (an inset depression) is the inverse of embossing and is sometimes used for a subtler result.

Best for: Premium and luxury bags where a tactile, dimensional logo or pattern adds perceived value. Often combined with foil stamping or applied over laminated surfaces.

Sustainability: Embossing does not add a laminate or plastic layer. Unlaminated embossed bags remain recyclable.

Spot UV

Spot UV applies a high-gloss UV-cured coating to specific areas of the bag surface — typically over particular elements of the design such as a logo, text or graphic. The contrast between the high-gloss UV area and the surrounding surface (especially when over matte lamination) creates a visually distinctive effect.

Best for: Premium bags where design elements need to stand out visually. Commonly applied over matte lamination to create a matte/gloss contrast.

Sustainability: Spot UV is applied on the surface. When used over lamination, the bag contains a plastic film layer and is not universally biodegradable.

Gloss Lamination

Gloss lamination bonds a thin, transparent, shiny plastic film to the outer surface of the bag. The film makes colours appear more vibrant and adds a reflective sheen to the entire surface. It also increases resistance to moisture and surface wear compared to an unlaminated bag.

Best for: Bags where vivid colour presentation and durability are priorities. Retail, fashion, gifting.

Sustainability: Gloss lamination adds a plastic film to the bag. Laminated bags are not universally biodegradable and should not be described as such.

Matte Lamination

Matte lamination applies a non-reflective plastic film to the bag surface. The result is a flat, understated finish with a premium hand-feel. Matte lamination is often preferred for bags where a refined, understated aesthetic is the goal — particularly luxury retail and fashion.

Best for: Premium and luxury bags where a refined, non-reflective finish suits the brand aesthetic. Works well as a base for spot UV applications.

Sustainability: Matte lamination adds a plastic film to the bag. Laminated bags are not universally biodegradable.

Soft-Touch Lamination

Soft-touch lamination is a variant of matte lamination that creates a velvety, rubberised surface feel. The tactile quality of soft-touch lamination gives an immediate sense of premium quality — often described as feeling like suede or velvet. It is among the most premium finishes available for retail paper bags.

Best for: High-end luxury bags, premium gifting, fashion and jewellery bags where the tactile experience of the packaging is important.

Sustainability: Soft-touch lamination is a plastic film. Bags with this finish are not universally biodegradable.

Finishing and Sustainability

The key sustainability distinction in paper bag finishing is between laminated and unlaminated bags:

•Unlaminated bags — including those with foil stamping, embossing or spot UV applied — remain recyclable and biodegradable (subject to local facilities).
•Laminated bags (gloss, matte or soft-touch lamination) contain a plastic film bonded to the paper. They are not universally biodegradable and should not be described as such.

If your brand makes sustainability claims about packaging, confirm the specification of your bags with the production team before making those claims publicly.

Finishing and Printing Together

Finishing is applied after printing. The combination of printing and finishing determines the final look and feel of the bag. Common combinations include:
