Paper Bag Sizes: How to Choose the Right Size
How paper bag dimensions are stated, how to measure your product, and how to approach custom sizing.
Paper bag dimensions are typically stated as Width × Gusset × Height. There is no universal standard sizing chart for paper bags — dimensions are specified per order based on the product being packaged. Custom sizes can be produced according to approved specifications.
How Paper Bag Dimensions Work
Paper bag dimensions are expressed as three measurements. Understanding what each one represents helps you specify a bag that fits your product correctly.
Width
The width is the front-facing dimension of the bag — how wide the opening appears when you look at the bag from the front. The bag width should comfortably exceed the widest point of the product being placed inside.
Gusset (Side Depth)
The gusset is the side panel that gives the bag its depth when open. A bag with a 10 cm gusset can hold products up to approximately 10 cm in depth. Some bags have a flat base gusset (a folded bottom), some have side gussets, and some have both — the type depends on the bag design.
Height
The height is measured from the base of the bag to the top edge, before the handle. The height should be sufficient to contain the product and allow the bag to close comfortably above it. For bags with twisted or rope handles, additional height above the product is needed for the handle attachment.
How to Measure Your Product
To specify the right bag size, start with the dimensions of the product you are packaging:
- 1Measure product width. Note the widest horizontal dimension. Add at least 3–5 cm for comfortable insertion and bag structure. This becomes the bag width.
- 2Measure product depth. Note how deep (front-to-back) the product is. This informs the gusset dimension. Add a small clearance.
- 3Measure product height. The bag should comfortably contain the product. For most retail bags, the height above the product line should be 6–10 cm to allow for handle attachment and comfortable carrying. For boxes or rigid items, add more clearance.
- 4Consider the handle type. Twisted paper and rope handles need enough bag height for the handle holes to be punched and reinforced. Die-cut and D-cut handles are cut directly from the bag top, which affects how the height is used. See the Handle Types guide for details.
Other Factors That Affect Size Choice
Weight of the product
Heavier products require bags that are both correctly sized and built from appropriate materials — higher GSM paper, robust gluing and suitable handle attachment. A bag that is the right size for the product but uses paper that is too light may fail under load. See the GSM Guide for more on paper weight selection.
Multiple products or variable contents
If the same bag style needs to work for a range of products (e.g. a retail bag used for different items at different sizes), specify a bag that comfortably fits the largest item. Overly large bags can look poorly proportioned for small products.
Stacking and storage
Bags that are stored flat before use have different space requirements than bags stored in dispensers. For retail environments with display space constraints, the folded dimensions of the bag when flat can be worth considering.
